NEW ZEALAND SUB ANTARCTIC ISLANDS’
ENDEMIC BIRD SPECIES
The New Zealand Sub Antarctic Islands include five archipelagos located almost at the southernmost edge of the submerged Zealandia continent in the Southern Ocean, SW of New Zealand.
These islands are: Antipodes Islands - Auckland Islands - Bounty Islands - Campbell Island group - The Snares Islands.
Auckland, Campbell and Antipodes islands have recent volcanic origin.
The Snares and Bounty islands are granite outcrops.
About the vegetation, the unique species “megaherbs” has huge leaves and large bright colored flowers. But the introduced sheep and goats have damaged these areas. The forests can be found on the Snares and Auckland Islands.
The weather is wet and cold, with strong winds and little sun.
There are now uninhabited nature reserves since 2000s.
They shelter numerous pelagic seabirds and penguins which breed there. The remarkable biodiversity of these regions includes endemic and rare elements with distinctive plants, birds, invertebrates, marine mammals, fish and algae. Some examples of adaptation have been reported from these islands.
Several birds and invertebrates have lost their ability to fly. Except on the Bounty Islands which are covered in guano, the tall grasses display their bright coloured flowers below the cloud cover of the sky of the other islands.
The tourism increase involves the management of these disturbances, in order to protect the wildlife of this area. They are National Nature Reserves, which is the highest conservation status.
